Leader | Employee Disconnect

Leaders think they’re well tuned in to what’s happening within the organization. Employees think that leaders are NOT tuned in. What gives? Leaders get comfortable living in a bubble and often they are more comfortable with task management rather than people management so it’s easy for them to ignore the people aspect.

It’s my opinion that a lot of leaders just start running on auto-pilot out in la-la land and/or they become disengaged themselves and then the ripple effect happens and the disconnect grows. We set leaders up to fail because we don’t provide them with training then we throw them to the wolves. This hasn’t worked out well for us (Great Resignation; only 20% of employees are engaged; retention tenure 1-2 years).

First off, let’s be astutely aware that this disconnect exists and is extremely prevalent. We can only improve if we recognize this.

Secondly, leaders need to intentionally create a safe environment where trust thrives. This MUST happen from the top down and include all hierarchical levels (no one left behind!). I don’t mean to sound dramatic here, but, if one level isn’t on board, the entire system will fail.

Thirdly, leaders must work to solicit honest, constructive feedback. We must teach leaders how to confidently navigate these conversations and how they can listen and encourage employees to speak up. An Executive Coach can help!

Fourth, transparent communication around action/inaction and appropriate follow-through and accountability is crucial to closing the disconnect. A strong, effective senior leadership team is necessary for an accountability structure that trickles down.
