Have you identified a dysfunctional, ineffective, inept, poor performing leader in your organization? Not sure what to do about it? Here are 4 ways you can deal with the situation.
#1) Provide them with the opportunity to improve. Give them training, resources and/or hire an Executive coach to develop them. Over 60% of companies offer NO training for leadership development. Leaders are generally promoted based on technical skills and then thrown to the wolves.
#2) Move them into a non-leadership position where they can potentially retain a title but don’t have direct reports. Explore dual career ladder options. Not everyone wants to be a people manager.
#3) Get rid of them! Especially if they prove uncoachable and are set on maintaining a fixed mindset or narcissistic behavior. This is a great opportunity to send them to work for the competition.
#4) Pretend you don’t notice and do nothing – YIKES! Not holding them accountable by providing them with a chance to improve and then consequences if they don’t can be extremely frustrating for others. Turning a blind eye tells others that you don’t care.
Things I’ve heard by senior leaders who turn a blind eye, “He brings in a lot of money and we don’t want to get rid of him even though he’s toxic and dysfunctional with others.” Don’t you want someone who brings in money AND engages, energizes, and motivates others for the chance at higher profitability? Imagine the opportunities!
